The light at the end of the tunnel

There are lots of stories of people on the brink of death seeing some light at the end of the tunnel. Tell you what – that’s nothing special, I personally see it several times a year. At least that is what my sense of vision tells me. It lies though.

Sometimes I make mistakes in treating my diabetes and then my blood glucose level drops low enough to starve cells either in my visual cortex or in my retina. Starvation causes them to glitch, first by making bright areas in my field of vision even brighter, and later these spots gather in the center. If I close my eyes at that moment I will see a bright white round spot in the darkness. The light at the end of the tunnel. Nothing special.
